Taekwondo is a sport or martial art which has a variety of different styles. It is a form of martial arts which emphasizes power and technique and can be classified as a total fitness program. The basic principles of Taekwondo are the use of blocks, open-handed strikes and a variety of take-downs.

Students are taught to be calm, composed and balanced. This helps in surviving intense situations. As a result, Taekwondo students become disciplined and confident individuals. They also learn to assess their surroundings and take rational decisions.

When a student starts training, he or she might be introduced to kicks such as a stomping, spinning or jumping kick. He or she may also be taught a variety of joint locks. These techniques are designed to give a practitioner the advantage in a fight against an opponent who is weaker than him or her.

Taekwondo is usually performed in bare feet. However, there are schools that have specific styles that allow students to wear shoes. There are also some schools that allow a student to wear a half-red/half-black belt.

The color of the belt is important to the rank of the person wearing it. In general, darker colors mean higher ranks. For example, a black belt represents a dan or master instructor, while a blue belt is a gup or junior.

Students are tested for their skill and mastery of different aspects of the martial arts. This may include breaking boards, performing a pattern, and physical fitness tests. Some schools require a student to show proficiency in self-defense as well.
