Jiu jitsu is a martial art that allows smaller, weaker individuals to defend themselves against larger, stronger opponents using superior leverage and technique. It is a comprehensive self-defense system that includes throwing, takedowns, trapping, leg sweeps, joint locks, holds and chokeholds. It can also include striking techniques and weapons.
Originally from Japan, where it is known as jujutsu, jiu jitsu is a close combat system that employs superior positioning, grip and leverage to subdue or defeat an unarmed enemy. The arts focuses on controlling your opponent and using their aggression against them. It is a physically and mentally demanding sport, but it teaches students to use their size and strength against opponents of much greater size and strength. In addition to physical fitness, jiu jitsu gives its students confidence, knowledge and body-dexterity that few other sports can provide.
Helio Gracie founded a new style of jiu jitsu, now known as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). BJJ emphasizes submission and grappling techniques that allow a smaller person to neutralize a larger opponent. BJJ is also known as a “gentle art” due to its emphasis on grappling and control.
The mount is one of the most dominant positions in jiu-jitsu. From here, you can attack with elbow strikes and kicks as well as use a variety of different chokes to finish the fight. It is important to understand the different options that you have when in the mount, and to develop your transitions between the mount, back mount, chest to chesk, kesa gatame, and north-south position.
