Originally developed by the legendary Brazilian martial arts pioneer, Royce Gracie, jiu jitsu is designed to allow a smaller, weaker person to defend themselves against a larger, stronger opponent using a variety of grappling techniques. In addition to being an incredible physical workout, jiu jitsu offers mental and emotional benefits as well. It can help develop a strong sense of self-confidence, improve your ability to stay calm and focused in stressful situations and increase your body’s awareness of your surroundings.
The most important thing to remember about jiu jitsu is to respect your training partners, regardless of their skill level or rank. While a little banter and lighthearted jokes are fine, most students will not put down their fellow competitors in public or in private, or criticize them for their size or lack of flexibility or coordination. Jiu jitsu is not a sport for the egotistical, and many academies will kick out any student who displays an attitude of superiority.
The jiu jitsu community is a close-knit group of people who share a common interest and enjoy helping one another. The majority of students will never meet outside of the jiu jitsu world, but those who do often have strong friendships and bonds. The jiu jitsu world is also very welcoming and inclusive, with many events, competitions, and expos that bring everyone together.
